Just that it's boring to pin items simply because they're expensive. As in, if it's really just Louboutins and Chanel bags, with no organizing principle(s), no inklings of personal style, how is that interesting? The fact that you can pin items you couldn't afford/shoes you couldn't walk in ought to free you of constraints in expressing some aesthetic vision. It shouldn't, however, be an excuse to complain about how one cannot afford to have the entire contents of Net a Porter shipped to one's closet. That's a concern, but it's not precisely a style concern..Phoebe Maltz Bovyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17996039330841139883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-72106666128669606352012-04-27T08:04:29.473-07:002012-04-27T08:04:29.473-07:00Your links are giving me ideas. However, the Bloch flats (black patent - after seriously considering the red patent) I'd been coveting finally became available again on Zappos, and just arrived, and are beautiful.

And while I'm not capable of walking in a narrow heel, the adobe pumps led to a "you may also like" pair of Cole Haan nude wedges that are both on sale and available in my size. Hmm! Totally agreed re: the fun of adding height from time to time, in non-torturous ways. I also think hovering is often brought on by the guilt of working parents (usually, though not always, mothers). Much the same way that Hollywood movies and TV shows so often feature plots about fathers who didn't have time for their children, because the people making them generally are fathers who don't have time for their children.Andrew Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13453328821252013152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-25464579589770432902012-02-18T15:54:09.950-08:002012-02-18T15:54:09.950-08:00I agree that it's possible, yes. At the same time, because of modern technology and labor-saving devices, the typical stay-at-home mother has less to do in the way of non-child-raising housework than she did in, say, 1950. I can think of women reasonably close to my age who decided to quit their jobs to stay at home with a baby, but I can't think of any who felt that they needed to quit their jobs pre-baby just to stay caught up with non-baby-related housework. Without non-child-related work to fill one's time, there's sort of a natural tendency to hover. If one sees otherwise, that may be because women who stay at home are more likely to have more traditional attitudes/ be more averse to hovering than those who choose to return to work.Isabel Archerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05215686063861945491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-50118627239115978052012-02-18T15:19:54.634-08:002012-02-18T15:19:54.634-08:00I believe you're seeing two opposed ideas here...I believe you're seeing two opposed ideas here which are not, in fact, opposed. There's a big difference between being home for one's children and hovering over the children constantly. In fact, I think the tendency to hover over children constantly and overparent them is much more pronounced in two-worker couples than in couples with a stay-at-home parent. So I think you'll find that both viewpoints are going to prevail in conservative writing.Andrew Stevenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13453328821252013152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-30550620404069105862012-02-09T12:15:09.720-08:002012-02-09T12:15:09.720-08:00"the gospel that he would like elites to prea..."the gospel that he would like elites to preach looks very different from most contemporary varieties of social conservatism."

Precisely. People kept thinking our Bisou was a standard poodle puppy, to the point that we started to get concerned. Had we been misled? Was she going to grow tall enough to reach the counter? She may be a bit tall for a miniature, but the issue was mostly that poodles come in three sizes, and "miniature" is actually "medium" in poodle terms, and because Bisou's definitively not a "toy" - i.e. handbag-dog-sized - people guess the other variety.Phoebe Maltz Bovyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17996039330841139883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-6053600692007437962012-01-14T08:12:47.551-08:002012-01-14T08:12:47.551-08:00It's the sweater-vests. I mean, to a point, being small and (a wild guess here that this might apply to you as well) not someone who spent one's youth tanning can make 24, say, look borderline. But not too many do at 27-plus. Is it part of the card-anyone-who-looks-under-40 policy that was, I believe, the rule in NY if not beyond? Where it's not precisely that 28 looks 20, more that 28 looks young, and you never know. Or does the person doing the carding expect near-30 women to be so delighted with being thought young as to give a big tip, or become repeat customers? Sort of like when, at the local coffee place, I come in looking especially haggard and ancient, and the wedding rings really do make a statement of age in a college town where the undergrads are incredibly unlikely to be married (and the postdocs only slightly more so)... and I'm called "miss." And it's like, sure, why not? But I'm maybe a decade older than the person ringing me up, and I don't think that's lost on the hipster in question. So in these cases, my guess is, it's either that 25-35 looks more like 18 than it does like 60, so an assessment is made, or that 25-35 looks 23-37, but women in this range are thought to be endlessly delighted by being thought 20. And I feel like maybe I would have been flattered by this at 22 or 23, when it was conceivable I'd have passed for 20, but now it's too preposterous for me to think it's a sincere assessment of my perceived age.Phoebe Maltz Bovyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17996039330841139883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315024531213408708.post-60491828730419861142011-12-04T16:04:38.739-08:002011-12-04T16:04:38.739-08:00I was going to suggest the same re: watches.
